January 3, 2012: Application Portfolio closed to users who have not finalized (applied)

The process used to assess applicants for the MMBP is currently undergoing review, and it is anticipated that changes will be made to the Application Portfolio this spring, including changing, removing and/or adding questions.

The Application Portfolio is now inaccessible to users who have not finalized (applied). It is hoped that the application process will resume in the summer of 2012. Users may be required to provide some information again in a new format once the application reopens. Please contact the MMBP Office if you would like more information.

December 19, 2011: Accelerated Stream Pilot

With the delay in funding for the regular MMBP Core Midwifery Phase, the MMBP staff and board are working to secure funding for a revised Accelerated Stream (AS) to be piloted in 2012. It is expected that this program will provide a basic orientation to Canadian midwifery and various skills assessments over approximately 10 weeks.  Although we have no guarantees yet, we are happy to say that it is looking likely that this will be funded.  In order to be prepared to offer the AS Pilot next year, we are currently in the process of identifying eligible candidates who might be successful in an accelerated stream.

Based on experience in the MMBP and similar programs, we have determined that the following criteria are needed by candidates in an accelerated stream: excellent English language fluency, high level of proficiency in professional communication, and experience as an autonomous midwife working with a model and scope of practice that is similar to Canada’s with no significant competency gaps (discrete competency gaps in certain areas may be able to be accommodated).  Candidates assessed by the MMBP to meet these criteria, will be invited to participate in an interview process to determine if they will be selected to participate in the accelerated stream pilot in 2012.

December 15, 2011: Notice of upcoming closure of Application Portfolio

The process used to assess applicants for the MMBP is currently undergoing review, and it is anticipated that changes will be made to the Application Portfolio this spring, including changing, removing and/or adding questions. Therefore the Application Portfolio tool will be closed on January 2, 2012 for users who have not Finalized (applied). It is hoped that the application process will resume in the summer of 2012.

While efforts will be made to retain/transfer as much of your Application Portfolio information as possible, you may be asked to provide some information again in a new format once the application reopens. Therefore if you think you may still apply to the MMBP at some time in the future (or you just want a record of your entries), it is recommended that you print or save each webpage of your application by January 1, 2012.

Please contact the MMBP Office if you would like more information.

November 16, 2011: Status of the MMBP

The MMBP is currently in the process of transitioning from a pilot project to a long-term program.   Over the past several months, we have been consulting with provincial and federal governments to secure funding that will allow the program to continue delivering assessment and training services across Canada. Although we are confident that funding will be secured in the months ahead as we continue our consultation, two issues are now clear:

1.     Due to the delay in funding confirmation, we unfortunately have to cancel our planned January 2012 offering of the Core Midwifery Phase.  This decision was not made lightly and was not foreseen; and,

2.     All levels of government have indicated their support for the sustainability of the program and we are confident that financial support will be secured for a 2013 offering of the Core Midwifery Phase (CMP).  We are currently exploring the feasibility of a ‘fast-track’ option to keep eligible candidates moving through the MMBP.  Should we move ahead with this option, we will be in contact with selected applicants.

We expect to have more information to share with you in the coming months. We realize these timeline changes to the MMBP program will have great impact on many of you.  We sincerely apologize for this and will continue to update you as further developments arise.
